Helpful Tips To Keep Your Pup Cool This Summer

Posted by Sara Kinne on

Summertime is coming, and the weather is heating up for many of us. While we love enjoying the sunshine with our furry friends, it's essential to take precautions to make sure they don't overheat! Here are some tips to keep in mind as you enjoy the longer days.

Stay Hydrated -
Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times. Consider adding ice cubes to keep it cool - some dogs love the added crunch! And don't forget to bring a travel bottle whenever you leave the house.

Enjoy A Shady Spot -
Don't spend too much time in direct sun. Plan walks in the early morning and evening to avoid the midday sun and hot pavement (don't forget to check the pavement with your hand before letting paws on it!). If your pup needs to be outside, ensure they have access to shade with good air circulation.

Share Frozen Treats -
Freeze bone broth in ice cube trays to give as treats or add to your dog's water bowl. You can also freeze dog-safe fruits such as apples (seeds & core removed), blueberries, and strawberries for something sweet!

Get To Grooming -
Depending on the breed, you might want to consider a summer haircut to keep your pup cooler. Regular brushing can remove excess hair (insulation) and uncomfortable mats, making it easier for your dog to regulate its body temperature.

Craft A Chill Lounge -
Your dog will probably gravitate towards shady concrete or the kitchen linoleum, but if you want to create an extra chill nap spot, there are a variety of cooling pads available. They range from pressure-activated gel to ones with freezable inserts. You might have to try a couple to see which your dog prefers!
